The Art of Giving Care ~ October 11, 2015

My husband Rod is my caregiver, chef, minister of laughter, partner in crime, world class snuggle and best friend. In spite of all that is going on in my life, he makes time to give back to the community at the Council on Aging's Meals on Wheels Program. I'm so proud he's been named October 2015's Volunteer of the Month.

I'll have an update on me after we meet with my oncologist on October 15th. Let's see if I can continue to baffle the medical community!

Album of the Heart ~ March 9, 1874

This short poem in Great Grandmother Flora's Album of the Heart is from Ida Nevis. She may have been a classmate or a fellow student at the Dance Academy in San Juan. I did find a portrait artist by the name of Ida Nevis in San Francisco City Directory for the year 1883. Perhaps she was the one.

The little violet in our path
May give us days of sorrow

Sweet Wild Violets - Walk in Peace

Tis such a fondness memory hath
Of youthful years to borrow!

Whole volumes at such times we read
Within the humblest flower

Forget Me Not

As we the paths of childhood tread
If but for one brief hour!

Once again I've combed through numerous poetic references and have not been able to find a published author. Are these words of insight and wisdom the writings of a girl in her 20's or someone of middle age looking back at youth? Who is to say? Sometimes the importance is simply in the words, not who wrote them.

There's a Five Dollar Fine for Whining ~ March 13, 2014

It's so easy to get caught up in your every days and start whining. Here we have a $5 fine for such nonsense. We choose to start each morning with irreverence, a good breakfast and a game of cribbage. Sets the tone for the day and reminds us to not take ourselves, or the world, too seriously.

We are all dealing with something, for us it's aging and health issues, but it's only part of who we are. The concept here is that you have options, so be sure to make good use of them and enjoy the ride. We find joy in giving time to favorite charities, the creative process, daily walks, getting dirty in the garden, blue highway road trips, and spontaneity. What is it that gets your motor running and takes you to a positive place?

It's our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.
